I was actually watching this song clip on TV today, and the song’s theme was about smiling. And being a happy person in general (I love smiling <— see), it hit me ! What if people were willing to push themselves a bit more into smiling instead of frowning or getting upset?
Ever heard the saying “it takes 42 (or 43, or some big number) muscles to frown but only 17 muscles to smile” ? well even though it isn’t anatomically correct (in reality smiling takes one more muscle than frowning – 12 vs. 11 check this article about this), but what stands true about it is the psychological effect it brings upon people, both the smiler and the smilee (are these even words? )
By now, you must be asking yourself, what does this have to do with HR? well simply smiling effects all human relations, including work relations, employer employee, team work, you name it..
If an employee puts a slight more effort and smiled at his manager, smiled at his work mate, (for people who only interact with computers..smiled at his laptop or PC – okay this might be slightly overdoing it!) then I am sure this will spread out positivity in the workplace and help us get more work done with positive attitude. (for more info about positiveness in the workplace, check out our article Positiveness in the workplace).
And what about managers? put a smile on it! if your employees sense positiveness in your attitude towards work and towards them, smiling when addressing them, this will surely have a tremendous effect on their work results.
The key though is to have a sincere smile, not a fake smile. In fact, a study found that fake smiling actually can have a negative effect on employees, while sincere smiling had a great effect on employees (check out the study here)
So in essence, smiling really has a positive effect on both parties involved, and whether it takes a slight more effort to do or not, the returns are much more rewarding.. So keep smiling, sincerely! Try it, what have you got to lose !
