Previously we had discussed both topics of employee motivation and job rotation on separate terms, each on its own. Yet what is an important factor that needs to be highlighted is how bound these two topics are, and how under-evaluated their relationship and their effect on each other are! In fact, and based on my experience, many companies fail to employ either employee motivation, or job rotation, or both.
Let us start with a short introduction..
Motivated employees, oh what a term that is often misinterpreted or forgotten by employers, especially in the Middle East. It is taken for granted, that employees would come motivated.. and do they? I leave the answer to you as Human Resource Managers and Direct Managers (hint: NO!) And the next question would be, why do we need motivated employees? Of course productivity, win-win situation for the employer and employee, more profits, happy customers, and the list goes on and on…
Having settled down the topic of why we need employee motivation. Here comes the how; we had previously written about several employee motivation techniques, such as creating a Positive Environment, Praise and Recognition, Impact of Compensation on Employee Performance, and the ability to Grow and Develop. Yet what about job rotation; how much of a motivational approach is it?
Job rotation (check out more about it in prior article What is job rotation?) is another forgotten aspect in the Middle East, yet if performed correctly it can be a great money saver, time saver, and performance enhancer for the company. Think about it. If you are looking to hire this rare quality for your company, you probably have it somewhere within your organization, or you might be able to develop it within some existing employee and hence rotate him/her from one job to another. The employee knowing how the organization considers job rotation will be motivated to perform better, and on different levels, to expect vertical and horizontal promotions.
In addition to above benefits, and as discussed in the prior article, job rotation helps employees reduce stress, increase knowledge, develop career, all of which fall into the category of employee motivation. Non stressed employee are happier employees. More knowledgeable employees are excited employees. Employees with career development are motivated employees. It is as simple as 1 + 1 = 2.
So in essence, focusing on these two aspects is key for success for companies as well as employees, and they both go hand in hand. They can be more beneficial than employers might perceive, and this is where Human Resource Managers would come in and highlight the importance of such actions. In summary .. Employee Motivation and Job Rotation: They meet at a successful work environment.
