Time management is one of the key skills modern day employees are required to have. It has become a necessity with the fast pace of work and “yesterday” deadlines to become very efficient and accomplish your tasks in the shortest amount of time, yet also with the highest quality possible. So the key dilemma lies in this question; how to manage your time.
Properly managing your work time is really beneficial for both employer and employee, and it goes along with the concept of working smarter instead of longer or harder (you might want to check out our article entitled Work Smarter Not Harder). It also falls into the same path of enjoying an equilibrium of work and personal time, which needs to be separated from work time to keep work time productive.
So as a first step in managing your time, you need to realize not all your time should be work time. You need to give work time its own dedicated time frame, and also separate it completely from personal time. Personal time needs to be enjoyable time, allowing you to breathe from stressful thinking required within work or related to work. Enjoying time with your family, friends, watching TV, going out, practicing prayers, yoga, sports, or all the likes are great actions to fill your personal time with.
Next, you also need to prioritize your work. Many of us during work are bombarded with tasks, and if it happens to you like myself, at times you stand still at to what to start with! This is where prioritization kicks in. Which task is more important? start with that! All of them are equally important? it is then generally best to start with the easiest ones and the ones requiring least amount of time to finish, since this gives you a sense of accomplishment. You also need to be clear to your superiors about priorities and timelines, and your capability to accomplish which tasks within which time frame.
Do not over push yourself and risk quality. In your commitment to timelines for accomplishing your tasks, make sure you are giving yourself some flexibility to really finish these things with the proper quality. To manage your time efficiently you need to perform the right things, with the right quality, at the reasonable time. Working extra hours might be required at particular moments, but do not make it the norm.
Give yourself short work breaks. It is a normal approach also during your work time to take short breaks, or we can call them refreshers. You might take short smoking breaks(even though i am a strong anti-smoking person), short social media breaks (short okay ?!), small chats with friends, moving/walking around every 15 mins (healthy – your body will thank you), taking short eye breaks (especially for computer intensive work environments, where looking away for small distances is a great healthy habit)
In short, how to manage your time? manage it with quality, efficiency, fun and accomplishments. Make your work journey a great one, everyone will be happy .. and will thank you for it!
