Oh job interview job interview, doesn’t the word simply scare you? I mean it’s more like a two headed sword, one edge very scary with the effect it might have on your life, and the other edge having potential hope for a better career. And it is usually where there is hope, there are life affecting decisions, and this is where a person, here a job seeker, will be most stressed and under pressure.
Now provided all of the above, the job seeker will need to be well prepared for this potentially life changing event, the job interview, but surprisingly and out of my experience interviewing hundreds of job seekers through my role in HR, I very often notice many job seekers fail to come prepared with some of the key items that are needed for the interview. This is where i decided to share with you these things, hey maybe one day i might be interviewing you and be positive about the outcome !
Learn about The Position
It is so sad to see a job seeker applying to a job, and not having a clue what the position is about. S/He even comes to the interview, discusses with you his/her portfolio, and then eventually the job might not be of interest to him/her. This situation is bad for both the job seeker and the recruiter. The main reason this occurs is that many job seekers are just throwing out their resumes to any potential position out there, and this is wrong for so many reasons; It wastes their time looking at jobs they simply don’t want, and it wastes the time of the recruiter as well. And this is where Job Descriptions are very useful. Before coming to an interview, make sure you thoroughly read the job description, requirements, etc.. If you can’t get to a detailed job description, communicate with the recruiter/interviewer, if possible, to learn more before going to the interview; trust me the recruiter will thank you for that.
Research The Company
Another important item job seekers forget to do is researching the company. Now with all the info online you have all the chance to learn about the company, look up its info, even check out the team. With facebook, twitter, linkedin and all social media, you can even check out who is the current team (at least partially) who is working at the company, check out its website. You would like to know what company you might we working for right? doing some google search might give you some news about the company .. What if it was losing business, would you want to join such a company? What about the products it sells, or services it provides? maybe these are of no interest to you. This is exactly why i’m recommending for you to get an idea about the company before the interview.
Prepare Your Answers
There are tons of articles online that will help you figure out what types of questions you might be asked during an interview, and how to answer those. So why not go through some of them? (you can check out our articles section regarding job interview questions and answers).
Dress For Success
You’re not going to a football game, and neither are you going to a bar, if you want to land a job, you need to dress for success. Dressing with the right clothes for the interview can leave a big effect on the interviewers, and this is why you need to learn about the position and the company to see what is expected from you and how the company looks at attires. As a general rule, wearing professional clothing, suites, is the best approach.
That was my two cents regarding things we have been noticing across interviews, what do you think of the above? agree? disagree? what other recommendations do you have as a recruiter or a job seeker?
